![]() ![]() Solutions stories include four key criteria: response, evidence, insight and limitations. There is growing momentum around the practice of solutions journalism, a fact-based, rigorous reporting method aimed at covering workable responses to societal problems. Given this understanding, in this article I draw on lessons learned from the solutions journalism summit - as well as my experiences as a visual journalism scholar and educator - to offer some suggestions and tools for visually reporting solutions stories. Certainly, audiences rely on the news media to report on these and other critical societal issues, but for audiences to have a more complete picture of global events, they also need reporting on valid responses to these issues. This means powerful photographs and/or video are the central feature of solutions visual journalism, but they have to be presented with text and/or other media to provide a comprehensive report on a response to a problem. It is not about images alone or images as illustrations. Solutions visual journalism is image-led. The solutions focus works when the story is about a widely shared problem - because that means many people will have tried to solve it, and some of those responses will be more newsworthy than others. The solutions focus is an additional approach for journalists. Not every story should be a solutions story. They take a critical look at the response, covering its limitations and its failures as well as any success. ![]() The story reveals useful insights that society needs - it’s not just inspirational.The story looks at results, not just good intentions, and provides evidence of those results.They draw on the voices of people working on the ground more than the views of those looking on from a distance.Stories are told through people, but these individuals are shown doing the work.
